Uridge DNA Project

I have started a DNA project, with Family Tree DNA, the pioneer and the world's largest DNA company in the new field of genetic genealogy.

The Uridge DNA Project is now set up. This will enable us to get the reduced project price of US$ 189 for the 37 marker Y DNA test.

I have invited one of my brothers to donate his DNA. As a female, the Y-chromosome test is not applicable to me! I encourage male Uridges, and Euridges to take the 37 marker Y DNA test. To achieve maximum benefits only two male Uridges from each family tree detailed on the Charts list is required.

The DNA test will help us identify whether these lines are connected, even though we do not have the documental evidence to prove it. The Paternal DNA, passed from father to son, tests the Y-chromosome, which is only found in males and is useful in verifying common ancestry. The DNA test will be the very extensive 37 marker paternal test. A perfect match of 37 markers means that the two individuals matching shared a common ancestor in recent times.

It will also provide us with more information, like deep ancestral origins, matches with other individuals that share the same results, our recent ethnic origins, and FTDNATiP - the Time Predictor to the Most Recent Common Ancestor between the test takers.

The genetic test kit consists of a cheek scraper and collection tube. The test is a painless cheek scraping. The effect of using the scraper is about the same as brushing your cheek with a soft bristle toothbrush. Two backup scrapers & tubes are included to insure that they have good samples for their lab.

William Oliver Lippiatt

This information relates to the descendants of John & Mary Uridge née Harcourt, (1790-1850) who lived in London.

Elizabeth Lippiatt wrote to me, explaining:

We have recently discovered a living cousin whose father Joseph George Lippiatt, b Jan 1902 Brentford, was a twin. The other twin died in infancy. He was never told the name of the
twin.

I had originally found the two birth entries on the same page in the and BMDs with the twin named William Oliver and believed he must be that twin brother.

Elizabeth is correct they were twins. This is conclusive evidence that proves they were twins. To have the same reference (3a 171) means they were on the same page in the register's book. If the birth certificates were purchased it would probably show the time of birth - to prove who the eldest was.

William Oliver was the son of William Joseph & Alice Maude Poynter Lippiatt née Uridge. Interestingly Christine, the person who provided the original information that William was born in May, and died in June could not be aware of Joseph George Lippiatt, as his name was not included in the family group. Additionally I found William Oliver's birth registered in 1902/Q1, and his death registered in 1902/Q3, so these dates do not quite concur.

George & Agnes Julie Head née Euridge

Serena Turner contacted me today about George & Agnes Julie Head née Euridge. Her grandfather was their son Reginald Head, my second cousin twice removed.

I look forward to working together with Serena to update their descendants. This family has not be updated since 2003. I am sure with the wealth of internet information out there since 2003 a much larger picture will emerge.

John & Sarah Uridge née Drover

Stephen Pomeroy contacted me yesterday about Sarah Drover, the wife of John Uridge.

Currently in our records it shows that Sarah was born in 1811 in Hine Abbas, Huntingdonshire, as detailed in the IGI when she married John in 1836.

However Stephen provided a transcript of a will

This is the last Will of me Sophia Bailey of the City of Winchester Widow made this twelfth day of January 1854 ...
I give and bequeath to the said Stephen Watson Five pounds and to my three sisters Ruth Higgs Ann B_____ and
Sarah Uridge the sum of five pounds each ...

Stephen's research led him to understand that Sophia was the sister of Sarah. Additionally he found the baptisms of Sophia, and Sarah with several of their siblings in the Itchen Abbas parish register at Hampshire Records Office.

I searched the 1851 census for Sarah, and found her enumerated as Sarah aged 40 born in Itchen Abbess, Hants. In the 1861 census, she was born in "Heitchon" Hampshire. In the 1871 census in Hampshire; and the 1881 census as Hants Itchen Abbas.

Descendants of Charles Reuben Euridge

Yesterday I heard via Genesreunited from Frances Whitehead. She is the 2 x great-grandaughter of Charles Reuben Euridge. This makes her my second cousin twice removed.

Frances is descended from Wilfred Charles Euridge, the son of Charles & Bertha Euridge née Yeomans.

I am delighted that she has contacted me. Hopefully she will be able to provide more information, and photographs of my father's family.

Walter James & Caroline Sarah Dear née Uridge

This information relates to the family that originated from Sydenham-Lewisham, the descendants of John & Mary Uridge née Harcourt, who emigrated to New Zealand.

Linda Dear has contacted me from New Zealand. She is researching the descendants of Walter James & Caroline Sarah Dear née Uridge. Their son Walter Ernest Dear was Linda's grandfather.

Linda has confirmed that Walter Ernest was born on 24 October 1893, and died 27 September 1966. Linda has a copy of his military service - he was in France and Gallipoli during the first World War.

Linda wrote:

In talking with my Aunt, my dad's oldest sister, she remembered her dad (Walter Ernest DEAR) as having only 2 brothers and 2 sisters - Thomas & Harold and Ida & Dorothy. She remembered a cousin, Les (perhaps that was the brother Lewis shown on your family tree!, maybe not?!) and she didn't know the names Doris or Millie which was interesting! but apparently Walter Ernest also had a younger sister which you haven't got on your list - Dorothy, married name Hughes, who died some time in the late 1980's I think, but I need to verify the dates of her birth and death. I met her at the funeral of my dad's sister, Gwytha, which was in 1980.

Emma Marie Uridge née Whitaker

As a follow-on to the previous blog on Emily Toler née Uridge, James Chapman has provided some additional information on Emily's mother.

He writes:

I note that the Spring 1926 electoral roll shows that Emma Marie Uridge neé Whitaker was registered for the Spring 1926 roll prior to her death. This was the only time she was shown at 205 South Lambeth Rd so it seems that she may moved in with her daughter and son-in-law as well as my great-uncle Bert and his parents only a short time before her death in late 1925.

I note that previously I had the incorrect image against the narrative for her daughter Emily. This will be changed in the next website update.

James & Harriet Richards née Evans

Carol Jones recently sent me the marriage certificate for James Richards (my maternal 3 x great-uncle), who married Harriet Moss née Evans on 25 August 1873 in the Parish Church of St. Davids, Carmarthen. Both James and Harriet stated they were widowed. One of the witnesses was Charles Moss.

Carol, and I have both researched Harriet but cannot find any reference to a Harriet Moss in the previous censuses, or in the marriage indexes. However her father was listed as John Evans, a Labourer. Also in the 1881 census, her daughter Hannah Evans is living with James & Harriet.

Many thanks to Carol for providing the marriage certificate. This information will be included in the next website update.

Changes to Blog Settings

I have reorganised the look-and-feel of the blog. I have started to use Labels for each post. I have moved the labels list to the top of the blog. This will enable you to locate postings about your specific area of interest. Additionally, I have included a hierarchy of postings.

Photographs & GRO References

During our vacation, I have taken the opportunity to restructure the photographs included in the narratives. Over the course of the last five years I have not been consistent with the file paths, and this has resulted in some photographs missing from the website. Hopefully this will now be resolved.

The new locations will be shown on the website in the next update.

Similiarily, I have started updating the GRO index references against the individuals. In the past I included only the year and registration district volume and page. In future the surname and name will be shown. However, it may be quite a long time before all references are included.
Both the new photograph file paths, and the GRO index references result in a minor change to the narratives, and therefore will be included in the New or Changed Narratives section.

Richard John and Mary Harcourt Masters née Uridge

Greetings from Phuket, Thailand. We are here on holiday celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary. Access to e-mails is very limited and download speed slower than the telephone modem.

However, this has given me an opportunity to catch up on the backlog of e-mails and information relating to the Euridge, Uridge One-Name Study.

This included information from Neil Mackley on the family of
Richard John and Mary Harcourt Masters née Uridge.

This information has been included in the database, and will be available on the website in the next update.

Website Update 7 January 2007

The website was updated on 7 January. This update focuses on the photographs, certificates, and some of the documents kindly provided by Kathleen Uridge.

As mentioned in the previous blog Kathleen Uridge's Collection during the last two months, I have been scanning and including the information into the database.

The documents particularly relate to the descendants of Richard & Sarah Uridge née Hall. This includes their original marriage certificate. Interestingly, although the marriage took place on 10 December 1847, the GRO marriage index incorrectly shows the marriage taking place one year later in 1848 Quarter 4.

Kathleen provided approximately 20 certificates, 60 documents, and 40 photographs. These are now all scanned, and the originals are stored in an archive box in inert polypockets.

Some of the photographs have been cropped and included against the individual narratives. The next steps are to include the remaining documents, and compile the full version of the photographs in an electronic album.

In the meantime, I am indebted to Kathleen for the opportunity to share her family collection. It has been a joy to put faces to names and expand considerably on what was known about the individuals.

GRO Index Images

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all fellow (E)Uridge researchers.

During the holiday period I have been downloading the GRO birth, marriage, and death index images from www.findmypast.com (previously www.1837online.com).

I originally compiled the BMDs from the registers at St. Catherine's House, aided by my sister Kay, and my husband Stuart back in the 1980s.

The purpose is to provide a permanent reference of all BMDs for the Euridge and Uridges listed in the GRO Indexes. Several minor corrections have been noted, and will be updated in the indexes maintained at the Guild of One-Name Studies archive.

Kathleen Uridge's Collection

As mentioned in the previous blog The Will of William Uridge, Kathleen Uridge has kindly loaned me a significant number of photographs and documents. I am currently in the process of scanning these, and including the information into the database.

I particularly liked two photographs. One of Kathleen's father Frank Uridge, taken during World War 1.


Also his brother, Richard John Uridge together with his wife Lillian Ellen Uridge née Bennell.

I am indebted to Kathleen for providing me with this opportunity. I have been researching this family since the early 1980s and it is wonderful to now see their photographs and put the faces to the names.

The Will of William Uridge

Yesterday, I received in the post a remarkable document from Kathleen Uridge, the daughter of Frank & Daisy Uridge née James.

The document was relating to the will of William Uridge, who named his three brothers John, Richard, and George. The document is a family tree drawn up, to show the descendants of these brothers.

Although William's estate was probated on 1 October 1890, by Frances his widow, the document detailing the family tree is thought to be dated about 1905. It refers to a letter dated July 12th 1905. About this time a (unknown) relation died in New Zealand, as this is referred to in the family narrative of his great-nephew Ernest Albert Uridge.

Kathleen has several other papers in her possession, and has kindly agreed to loan them so that I can scan, or photograph the papers. I am indebted to Kathleen for her willingness to share these documents and the information.

I am currently working through the document, and the information will be included in the next website update (hopefully this weekend).

William & Flora Jane Hunt née Euridge

Tessa Hunt has kindly provided the details from the marriage certificate of Flora Jane Euridge and William Hunt. The marriage was incorrectly indexed under the name of ENRIDGE.

The marriage was registered at Christchurch, Belper in Derbyshire on 3rd September 1906. William Hunt was 24, a gas labourer and Flora Jane 21 – no profession mentioned. They both lived at Field Lane, Belper and their fathers were John Hunt – Labourer, and John William Euridge (badly written) – deceased. The witnesses were Lily May Hunt and William Henry Euridge.

William Henry Euridge was my grandfather.

Tessa further writes "I thought that Lily May might be William’s mother, but when I found the family on the 1901 census she turned out to be his sister. His mother was called
Mary. According to the census the family lived at 7, Crown Terrace in Belper and the whole family were born in Belper. On this census there were 6 children."
